Gaming

Gaming and second language pedagogy

Objective:

With this activity we are trying to evidence the comprehension of both, text  and video,  and the capacity to make coherent questions about them.

After studying the texts “Digital Gaming in L2 Teaching and Learning” by JONATHON REINHARDT and “Principles on Gaming”  by JAMES GEE follow these steps.

A. Each of you will create a game. In this link you will have the possibility to use templates of many games https://www.classtools.net/  In these games you will create a quiz with the most important concepts of both texts. You can also select just one.
For example, you will ask in any of the games: why can games be understood as metaphorical tutors?  You will have the option to put the answer to that question or multiple-choice answers. Check your spelling, your grammar and also when creating questions, make sure the options are not too obvious. Keep a balance not too hard not too easy. After creating the game, make sure to obtain the link to it.

B. After obtaining your game link, post the link below.
C. Then, play at least 2 games created by your classmates and LET THEM KNOW you played them making a comment in the post and also giving your opinion about it: provide comments on the quality of the questions, how it helped you learn or extend the understanding of the reading, your experience as a player and so on.
D. Reply to your classmates’ comments. Once you have posted your game link, go back to the blog later, read comments you received and reply to your classmates.

EVALUATION CRITERIA
Ability to relate the concepts of readings in the game created and quality of the game (3 points)

Punctuality in the post (0.5 points) (You can make your posts until 3:00 pm on Monday)

React/respond to two games of your classmates (1 point)

React/respond to the comments you received in your post by your classmates. Do this before 7 pm on Monday  (0.5 point).

Note:
Guys, please, do not forget to download the app BAIKOH and to bring  any object or games you consider you can use to design a language game: Cards, colors, marker, clay, etc

Hi, I recommend you to select the "PONG" option. The keys for playing are "P" and "L" to move the one on the right, and the keys "Q" and "A" to move the one on the left.

    1. So nice Camila, I actually loved it since I can relate the information given in the text as I make a mistake in the game, the way you nailed the info of both text, about the origing of gaming in Pedagogy related to multiliteracies, the way you mention some of the categories of the principles and adapted them (empowered learners, problem based learners...), the definitions, and everything was appropiate. I give you 10/10, I love pin pong so I would stick to this game all day.

      Sincerely yours,
      JUAN JOSE RODRIGUEZ MESA

    2. Hi Camila, I found really funny we both used similar questions. I didn't play the pong game because it was too slow and boring jajaj so I chose the Space Invaders one. I think some questions were hard and they did help in comprehending the texts.

    3. Hi, Juan José.
I really like that you liked it and that you found it appropiate in relation to the concepts in the video and on the text. And I love ping pong too!

    4. Hi, Juan Pablo.
That is true! Sometimes it is too slow haha, but there are other moments that get faster. Also, I like that you consider that the difficult questions helped to understand the texts.
I'll play your game for checking the similarity that you commented!

    I used: https://www.classtools.net/codemaker/

Hi, I created the Codemaker in Classtools, for that it was necessary to copy the encrypted text and paste it on Word. Please open the Google doc (With @correounivalle.edu.co) and create a copy to edit (or copy and paste in another doc if that's the case (you can even print it). The second link is the prove I used one of the resources available in Classtools.net.

    2. Hi, Juan Jose.

I admit it took a lot of work for understanding how did it work. But then I tried to completed guiding me more through what I was guessing based on my notes more than through the codes D: However, it was good for reminding and refreshing the principles shown on the video.

    3. Hi Juanjo, honestly I don't know if I'm bad at these kind of things but I could not get my head around it and went all the way down to see what it said jajaja. I think the list of concepts laid down in the video is useful, but I don't think it helps in understanding such video.

    4. Thank you Camila and Juan Pablo for the feedback, I will use one message for answering both of you. I understand the difficult of the game is kind of hard with no instructor to keep your company and indicates you what to do. It's more a words game to complete a text with the 13 principles which summarize the video, what I tried to do was to synthesize the video in an encrypted text. I would use this worksheet only if I have at least 1 hour class and I want my students to complete the text in order to better comprehend the ideas. I was not sure about the ressources and other possibilities in the Classtools. I actually do know other websites and platforms to use gaming in pedagogy, in this case I recommend the lecturers to allow us the freedom to use any other, and not only that tool. However it be, I hope you got the concepts clear, you learned, I'm learning too and I am available to do better in pedagogical classes.

    1. Hi Juan Pablo, I played Pac Man. It is one of my favorites. There are very good questions, however, a couple of questions killed me. Too specific or maybe unclear. For example the one about which game was text and video or video was unclear to me. Maybe it needed more context. I liked the one about what aspect should not be pushed in using games in classes. The answer was length. Very important. It would depend on many things because some games never end; they have so many stages and levels. I think length would mean how much of the game the teacher wants to use and how. Not sure if that is what you were referring to, wasn't it? Fun game!!

    2. ¡Hola! Hice tu actividad y me parece que las preguntas fueron pertinentes para la actividad. Tuve problemas con el juego de la serpiente:( pero pude jugar Pacman, que me gusta bastante!

    3. To tell you the truth professor I added length because it was the first thing that came to my mind to add as the correct answer jajaja. Now that you mention it, it would also be important. For example, I read a paper about using the game Empire Earth to teach geography, which is lengthy strategy game, and I think it's a great idea. And that question was about how both the text we had to read and the video we watched both mentioned The Sims as an example of a game that can teach vocabulary, which I thought was like a fun little detail and I ran out of questions.
Thanks Karen! I do like Pac-Man too

    3. Hello, Karen!

I liked the concepts that you included in your game. I also appreciate that you use a different kind of game, easy to understand. Maybe, for me, was kinda difficult to write long answers. But it's not such a big deal.

      Good job! :)

    1. Hi, Luisa! I couldn't play with the Pac-mac option, I think it is my computer :(, but I played it in the Wordshoot option. I think this game is pretty related to the cycle of expertise principle and to the pleasantly frustration, because it has levels and it becomes more difficult the more one goes on, and in that way I felt a challenge. Also, The questions were very appropiated! Well done!

    2. Hi, Cami, thanks for your response. I did it in that way because I consider it's an excellent way to remember the concepts.

I tried to select interesting and important ideas from both the text and the video.

    1. Hi Daniela,
You extracted good ideas from the two texts. You focused on main aspects to help understand the topic. For example, you provided a definition and key principles. The items included powerful concepts such as empowerment, problem-solving, players as creative agents and so on; very helpful to understand the role of games in education. Now, at first trying to complete the exercise was confusing to me and I think it has to do with the way you managed capitals, because you present a statement that needs to be completed by joining another sentence, but some of the matching sentences initiated with CAPITALS!!! like another sentence started. My feeling was of frustration but then, in gaming you need to hold tolerance of uncertainty. I just moved on to the next statement and little by little I found the answers. The teaching here is that in developing this exercise, you need to work more on the way the first statement matches the second one. Capitals are an important semiotic resource as well as punctuation, you need to use that too. Also, at the end of the exercise I wonder, was this a game? Does this comply with the elements or characteristics of a game? What do you think?

    2. Hello, teacher. Thank you for taking the time to play the game and provide feedback on it, I really appreciate it. I totally understand your point, you are right. I'll try next time to organize the ideas in a better way and pay attention to such details since they become an important part in the development of the games. I have to admit that this activity was such a challenge because I am not really good at creating these kinds of activities. While I was creating the game I focused on the purpose set in the blog "you will create a quiz with the most important concepts of both texts” and I forgot to achieve the goals proposed by the texts. Without doubt, in future activities I will reconsider my objectives.

    3. Hello, Daniela

I think that you covered really important aspects of the both texts, I have to admit that at the first gaze, it was a little difficult to understand. But then it's really intuitive. I love it :)

    1. Hi Isa!
The questions you used were a good way for summering the text we read. Also, most of the options for playing are game-enhanced, that is to say, adaptation fo existing games. So everything fits very well, the games, the questions and the topic applied.
      Pretty interesting!
